European Council president Donald Tusk has claimed Brexiteers who rallied for an EU divorce without a plan have a "special place in hell".

In incedinary comments, Mr Tusk closed a news conference by saying: "By the way, I have been wondering what that special place in hell looks like for those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan to carry it safely."

His remarks prompted outrage among Brexiteers such as Nigel Farage and the DUP's Sammy Wilson.

It came after Mr Tusk flatly ruled out any changes to the Withdrawal Agreement reached with Theresa May at the end of last year. The Prime Minister is due to meet Mr Tusk, as well as European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, in Brussels on Thursday.
