Brexit news LIVE: Boris Johnson's plan 'breaks international law' as Sir Keir Starmer urges Downing Street not to 'reopen old wounds'

The Government's plans to override key elements of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement would "break international law", a senior minister has confirmed.

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis told MPs that Boris Johnson's aim to push through new laws to avoid a hard border in Ireland breached the divorce treaty the UK has already signed with the EU.

His admission came as the head of the Government Legal Department, Sir Jonathan Jones, resigned amid reports he was “very unhappy” with the proposal.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has responded to the controversy by calling on the PM not to "reopen old wounds" and instead to secure a trade deal with the bloc "and move on".
