Boris Johnson Brexit deal as it happened: Prime Minister insists 'no delay' to Brexit despite lawyer's court submission

Boris Johnson has insisted that he will not delay Brexit, despite his lawyers saying he will comply with a law calling for the October 31 exit date to be postponed if there is no deal.

Opposition lawmakers and rebels from Mr Johnson's Conservative Party voted through the Benn Act last month, which requires the PM to delay Britain's departure from the EU in the event of a no-deal.

Mr Johnson has previously promised he will abide by that law, which he has called "the surrender act", but on Friday said the options facing the country were his proposed new Brexit deal or leaving without an agreement, "but no delay".

It came as Rory Stewart blew the London Mayoral race wide open after announcing that he will stand as an independent candidate .
