Boris Johnson’s attempt to trigger an early general election has failed after his motion did not secure the required support of two-thirds of MPs.
It was the third defeat for the Prime Minister after MPs earlier passed a third reading of a bill designed to prevent a no-deal Brexit.
Mr Johnson accused Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of wanting to “stop the people from voting”.
The Commons voted for a general election 298 to 56, falling short 136 votes short of a majority vote.
