Brexit news latest: Duty-free purchases of cigarettes and alcohol to return under no deal plans

Britons will enjoy a return of duty-free shopping on trips to European Union if the UK leaves the bloc without a deal, Sajid Javid has announced.

The Chancellor said the Government will change the law so all duty on alcohol and tobacco will no longer apply in the event of no deal Brexit.

Under the plans, a bottle of wine bought at London's Heathrow airport could be up to £2.23 cheaper.

"As we prepare to leave the EU, I'm pleased to be able to back British travellers," Mr Javid said in a statement.

"We want people to enjoy their hard-earned holidays and this decision will help holidaymakers' cash go that little bit further."

Duty-free shopping is already allowed for those travelling to non-EU countries, but was stopped for EU travellers when the bloc's Single Market was introduced.

Boris Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the EU with or without a deal on October 31.

But MPs concerned about the economic fallout from no deal have voted to force the Prime Minister to seek a delay to avoid leaving without a deal, but he has said that he will not countenance an extension.
