Brexit news: Hundreds of protesters gather near Downing Street ahead of explosive Commons showdown

Scores of protesters carrying EU flags stood outside the gates to Downing Street today ahead of a Government showdown over legislation aimed at blocking a no-deal Brexit.

Singing along to a tuba, hundreds of protesters stood in Westminster shouting “Boris out” and “this is what democracy looks like” as the Prime Minister faced questions in the Commons.

Children also held signs outside Parliament on Tuesday saying “stop the coup” and “stop Boris”, while others pickets read: “We stand in united against a Tory Brexit”.

The latest protests come as the fate of Brexit hangs in the balance as Parliament prepares for an explosive showdown with Boris Johnson that could end in a snap election.

Members of Mr Johnson's own party, including former chancellor Phillip Hammond, are preparing to join opposition MPs in a vote to try to force a delay to Brexit beyond the October 31 deadline if he cannot secure a divorce deal with Brussels in the next few weeks.

Ahead of the attempt tonight by rebel MPs to try and take control of the Parliamentary agenda and block a no-deal, Mr Johnson said he would call a snap election if he is defeated.

The attempted coup comes as the Government lost its working majority after Conservative MP Dr Phillip Lee crossed the floor in the Commons to join the Liberal Democrats.

Posting a resignation letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the Bracknell MP wrote on Twitter: "After a great deal of thought, I have reached the conclusion that it is no longer possible to serve my constituents' and country's best interests as a Conservative Member of Parliament."

In the letter, he added: "The Brexit process has helped to transform this once great Party in to something more akin to a narrow faction, where an individual's 'conservatism' is measured by how recklessly one wishes to leave the European Union.

'Perhaps most disappointingly, it has increasingly become infected with the twin diseases of populism and English nationalism."
