EU leaders are poised to grant Theresa May a far longer extension to Brexit than she hoped as they meet for a crunch summit in Brussels later today.
The Prime Minister will repeat her request to delay Britain's exit from the bloc until June 30, with the possibility of an earlier departure if the UK's withdrawal deal is ratified.
But European Council president Donald Tusk called for the discussion of an alternative, longer extension, such as a "flexible extension" lasting "as long as necessary and no longer than one year".
The crucial summit follows Mrs May's whistle-stop tour of European capitals for talks with French president Emmanuel Macron in Paris and German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.
