Boris Johnson’s motion for a general election has been defeated for a second time ahead of Parliament's suspension for five weeks.
The Prime Minister’s bid for an October 15 poll was crushed as he failed to secure the two-thirds majority needed.
It comes after an emergency motion demanding the Government release all documents concerning its decision to shut down Parliament was passed in the Commons by 311 votes to 302.
Meanwhile legislation designed to stop the Government forcing through a no-deal Brexit became law this afternoon after receiving royal assent by the Queen.
And John Bercow announced he would step down as Commons Speaker, and quit as an MP on October 31 unless a general election is held before then.
