Brexit leads to 'weak' summer sales for EasyJet

EasyJet has cautioned that Brexit uncertainty means passengers are unwilling to book flights in the short term.

The British airline told its shareholders that the Brexit crisis is hurting business as customers are reluctant to purchase summer flights amid uncertainty over Britain's relationship with the EU.

This comes after the company revealed it expects to have made a £275m pre-tax loss over the last six months due to increased headline costs.

So the FTSE 100 company may be in deeper trouble for the rest of the year as Brexit chaos hits their Easter and summer holiday markets.

While the company said that the results for the last six months were in line with expectations, they need the usual revenue growth that key holiday period bring in order to recover.

However the chief executive John Lundgren explained that the lack of clarity may mean the company continues to struggle.

“We are seeing softness in both the UK and Europe,” he said, “which we believe comes from macroeconomic uncertainty and many unanswered questions surrounding Brexit.”

He said that these factors are “driving weaker customer demand.”

However Lundgren did also say, more positively, that EasyJet are “operationally well prepared for Brexit.”
