Brexit latest: Labour launches plan to stop PM 'forcing through no-deal'

Labour has launched a new plan aimed at preventing any future Prime Minister from forcing through a no-deal Brexit.

The party plans to force a vote on Wednesday which would give them control of Parliament on June 25.

It would give MPs the chance to introduce new legislation aimed at avoiding crashing out of the EU with no deal on October 31.

A Labour statement said: "MPs will have the chance to introduce measures, including legislation, that could help avoid a no-deal Brexit at the end of October.

"It would prevent a future prime minister proroguing Parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit against the wishes of MPs."

Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer (PA)

As the move was announced, Sir Keir added: "The debate on Brexit in the Tory leadership contest has descended into the disturbing, the ludicrous and the reckless.

"None of the likely candidates for the top job has a credible plan for how to break the deadlock before the end of October.

"Instead, we have witnessed candidates openly advocating a damaging no-deal Brexit and even proposing dragging the Queen into politics by asking her to shut down Parliament to achieve this."

It comes after there had been suggestions after suggestions a Brexiteer could prorogue Parliament to prevent opposition to no-deal.

Some Tory leadership hopefuls have also said they intend to leave on October 31 with or without a deal.

The move comes as those running to replace Theresa May laid out there Brexit positions.

However, European officials said today that the UK's new Prime Minister will not be allowed to bring a new Brexit deal to the table.

A European Commission spokesman said the Brexit deal that is on the table "has been approved by all member states" and that "a new prime minister will not change the parameters".
