Brexit food sell-out is hard to swallow as Tories open door to lower standards

We all know this UK Government routinely promises one thing and then goes and does another.

The latest example arrived on Monday night when the Tories overturned an amendment at Westminster that would have required all imported food to meet existing standards from January 1.

If passed, it would have forced ministers to ensure that all Brexit trade deals would have to meet strict UK animal welfare rules.

The Tories argued they had made “a commitment” on maintaining agricultural standards and so enshrining it in law was unnecessary.

Only the most committed Brexiteer who refuses to accept anything bad can happen from leaving the EU would believe that line.

The truth is the UK Government has made such a mess of the whole Brexit process they will now say or do anything to try and salvage any trade deal they can.

If that means imposing lower food quality standards so our markets can be swamped with cheap American imports, they’ll do it.

The sad fact is we always knew it would come to this.

The EU, for all its faults, represented the gold standard when it came to food and drink standards - something Scottish produce sellers have benefited from.

Brexit was always going to tarnish that reputation.

Who knows how low the Tories will sink next.
