Brexit: EU leaders agree to extension until January 31

EU leaders have agreed to an lengthy extension for Brexit, it has been announced.

Ambassadors have decided to accept the UK's request for a Brexit "flextension" until January 31, 2020.

European Council president Donald Tusk said: "The EU27 has agreed that it will accept the UK's request for a Brexit flextension until January 31, 2020. The decision is expected to be formalised through a written procedure."

This comes as MPs are expected to vote for a general election today to be held on December 12.

The vote is due to take place after 5pm this evening.

But Jeremy Corbyn has said his party will not vote for an election until no-deal Brexit is no longer possible.

However, the Lib Dems and the SNP have joined forces to push for an election on December 9.
