Staff at the Brexit Department received more than £1 million in bonuses in a year, official figures reveal today.

They show senior civil servants were given £172,000 of special payments in 2017/18.

Twelve of the top brass got end-of-year bonuses totalling £142,000, with the maximum being £13,750, with the remainder being awarded in-year.

More junior staff got payments totalling £844,780.

This included nearly £562,000 for end-of-year payments to 425 staff, with the maximum being £2,600.

Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said: “It’s astounding that people are being awarded bonuses when three years on Brexit still has not been delivered.”

A Brexit Department spokeswoman said: “It has been common practice for government departments to link individuals’ performance to their pay.”
