Brexit-bound UK, Netherlands kick off EU elections

Four days of voting across the continent will pit supporters of deeper integration against populist Eurosceptics [Henry Nicholls/Reuters]

Voting has started in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands for the landmark European Parliament elections.

Four days of voting across the continent will pit supporters of deeper integration against populist Eurosceptics.

Support for nationalists has been surging amid a rise in vocal anti-migrant rhetoric dominating many of Europe's media outlets, while traditional powerhouses such as Germany and France insist unity is the best buffer against shifting global economic and security interests.

More than 400 million voters across Europe will elect a total of 751 members, although that number is set to drop to 705 when the UK leaves the European Union.

The Dutch hold 26 seats in the European Parliament, though that will rise to 29 after Brexit. The UK has 73 European legislators, who would lose their jobs when their country completes its divorce from the EU.

Results of the four days of voting will not be released until Sunday night, although exit polls are likely to give indications of national results before then.
