Brexit: Boris Johnson and EC chief Ursula von der Leyen 'pause' crunch phone call

Boris Johnson and European Commission President Urusla von der Leyen have "paused" their last-ditch Brexit conversation, after speaking on the phone for an hour and a half.

The pair decided to take a break from the marathon chat - a phone call which could finally decide whether we leave the EU with or without a trade deal in less than a month.

The call is expected to kick off again at 6pm.

Earlier, the Government indicated Mr Johnson was willing to u-turn on his plan to break international law over Brexit - if progress is made on a Brexit trade deal this week.

Paymaster General Penny Mordaunt said the level playing field remains the "most difficult" issue preventing the UK and the EU from reaching an agreement.

Answering an urgent question on the negotiations, Ms Mordaunt told the Commons: "Intensive talks continue. In fact, the United Kingdom's negotiating team led by Lord Frost has been in talks with the EU almost every day since October 22 and is working tirelessly to get a deal on our future relationship.

"Indeed, this opportunity also affords us in this place to show our collective resolve in getting a good deal and our expectations of what that needs to look like and what we will not accept.

She added: "Whilst there has been some progress across many areas, familiar differences remain on the so-called level playing field, fisheries and governance.

"Of these, the level playing field issue is currently the most difficult."
