Brewery winning plaudits for Iron Brew Sour after creating it 'as a joke'

A brewery is winning plaudits for their new Iron Brew Sour creation from thirsty fans of Scotland's 'other' national drink - after initially creating it "as a joke".

The head brewer at Exale Brewery and Taproom, based in east London, only intended to brew their Krankie Iron Brew Sour beer as a birthday treat for Cumbernauld-born co-founder Mark Hislop.

But it went down so well on the day that they've been making it ever since - and people love it.

And if the sound of a beer that tastes like Irn Bru isn't Scottish enough, the head brewer Dan played Rod Stewart to it during the fermentation process through a submersible speaker.

Mark told Glasgow Live: "It's a bit of a funny story and started out as a joke. Dan the head brewer made it for my birthday as I'm from Cumbernauld, home of the Barrs factory.

The 4.2% ABV Krankie Iron Brew Sour is available in 440ml cans (Exale Brewing)

"So for my party we did a Rod Stewart day with Scottish breakfast rolls and we decided to make an Irn Bru sour and played it Rod during fermentation through a submersible speaker. The beer went down so well on the day we've been making it ever since and people love it.

"Even though it started as a joke were very proud of it - it's a very balanced beer with sweet malt aroma and a balanced sourness which is reminiscent of Irn Bru bars."

The brewery even have a special Spotify playlist to go alongside it for people to listen to while enjoying a can, featuring tracks by Glasgow artists such as The Pastels, The Amazing Snakeheads, Lylo and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

I don't know about all you but we sure would love to give it a wee try!
