Brewers top Pirates, 7-4

PITTSBURGH _ The Milwaukee Brewers got some sweet revenge against the Pittsburgh Pirates' bullpen Saturday night.

They batted around and scored four times in the eighth against three relievers, setting the stage for an eventual 7-4 victory at PNC Park.

Milwaukee singled five times in the inning, with rookie Orlando Arcia, Manny Pina and Keon Broxton all driving in runs against a Pittsburgh bullpen that shut down the Brewers' offense in a four-game sweep at Miller Park last weekend.

Arcia finished a home run shy of the cycle while also turning in a superlative defensive performance at shortstop, and Chris Carter hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

With the game tied, 2-2, the Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Neftali Feliz allowed two baserunners before departing with an injury and Arcia singled to right field against Felipe Rivero to get them back into the lead.

After Martin Maldonado struck out, manager Craig Counsell used his only other catcher in Pina to pinch-hit in the pitcher's spot. He responded with a two-RBI single to left to up the lead to 5-2. The second run scored on a terrific slide by Jake Elmore, who went in head-first and eluded a diving tag attempt by Francisco Cervelli.

Broxton followed with a single to center against Kelvin Marte who was making his major-league debut _ to stretch it to 6-2.

Pittsburgh got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth against Corey Knebel and Blaine Boyer. Milwaukee got a run back in the ninth when Hernan Perez led off with a triple and Carter singled to left _ his fourth hit of the game _ to make it 7-4.

Tyler Thornburg closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth to lock down his second save in as many nights and eighth of the season.

The Brewers, who posted a 1-0 shutout of the Pirates on Friday, fell behind by a 1-0 score in the first behind starter Jimmy Nelson.

Josh Harrison singled to lead off, moved to second on a Josh Bell walk, advanced to third on an Andrew McCutchen groundout and scored on a Gregory Polanco sacrifice fly.

Nelson wound up walking a batter in each successive inning but still managed to keep Pittsburgh off the board.

Broxton led off the game with a single against Ivan Nova, but the right-hander didn't allow another until the fourth as he silenced the Milwaukee offense.

The Brewers' best scoring opportunity came in the fifth, when Arcia tripled past a diving Starling Marte in left. But one batter later, he was thrown out at home when he tried scoring on a dribbler in front of the mound and Nova flipped the ball to a waiting Cervelli for the easy out.

Nelson responded with his first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a slick double-play turn by Carter at first. The after Scooter Gennett doubled to open the sixth, Carter slugged a two-out, first-pitch homer to left to give the Brewers their first lead at 2-1.

Pittsburgh appeared as if it would at least tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Marte it got two on with one out against Nelson, who was then lifted for Jhan Marinez.

Marinez got a ground-ball out and then made way for rookie Brent Suter, who fell behind pinch-hitting specialist Matt Joyce, 3-0, before recovering and getting Joyce to ground out to second and escape the jam.

Nelson allowed a season-high six walks to go along with four hits over 5 1/3 innings, but the four hits were tied for his fewest in an outing in the last two months. He also struck out four.

The Brewers put themselves in position to build on their lead in the seventh when Arcia doubled and was bunted to third, Domingo Santana walked and Broxton reached on a bunt single to load the bases.

Jared Hughes responded by getting Gennett to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, and the Brewers emerged empty-handed. McCutchen then made them pay with a two-out homer to right-center off Carlos Torres in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up.
