Brewers top Dbacks, 8-6

PHOENIX _ The bad news is the Milwaukee Brewers have had too much practice turning the page after tough losses.

The good news is they turn pages like a seasoned book club.

The Brewers did it again Friday night, recovering from a frustrating extra-inning loss at home to San Francisco the previous day to hold off Arizona, 8-6, at Chase Field.

Closer Corey Knebel, who closed out the eighth inning by striking out David Peralta on a 100-mph fastball, also took care of the ninth to record his eighth save. Arizona absorbed only its ninth loss of the season at home in 33 games.

The victory was marred by what appeared to be a significant injury to second baseman Jonathan Villar in the bottom of the eighth. Villar made a diving stab to throw out Chris Herrmann from shallow right field but fell to the ground and was unable to get back up on his own. He was taken off on a cart after being attended to for several minutes.

The Brewers have made a habit of scoring in the first inning and that trend continued with three more runs. Manny Pina doubled in two runs with two out and Villar followed with an opposite-field double off right-hander Randall Delgado to left to make it 3-0.

It did not stay 3-0 for long, however. Jake Lamb tied it with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning, blasting a three-run shot to center for his 16th homer of the season.

The starting pitchers settled in a bit after those opening salvos. The Brewers managed little damage until Hernan Perez led off the fifth with a long home run to left, his eighth of the season.

Again, it did not stay tied for long. Peralta snapped a string of eight consecutive hitters retired by Zach Davies with an opposite-field double to left. Paul Goldschmidt smacked the next pitch up the middle for a RBI single that made it a 4-4 game.

Lefty T.J. McFarland took over for Delgado in the sixth and the Brewers immediately got after him. Brett Phillips led off with an opposite-field single to left and took another base when Daniel Descalso bobbled the ball. Orlando Arcia followed with a perfect bunt hit, his third single of the game.

Jesus Aguilar continued to make a huge contribution off the bench, batting for Davies and lining a two-run double into the left-field corner.

The Brewers came at McFarland again in the seventh when Pina and Villar singled with no outs and Phillips bunted them up. Right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen took over for the Diamondbacks but was unable to stem the tide as Arcia ripped a sacrifice fly to right and pinch-hitter Nick Franklin laced a run-scoring single to left to make it 8-4.
