ST. LOUIS _ Greg Holland, signed to pitch the ninth inning for the Cardinals, made his debut with the club on Monday night. In the 10th inning.
There was no save at stake but Holland walked four men, one intentionally, the final one forcing in a run as the Milwaukee Brewers broke open a 4-4 tie in the 10th and posted a 5-4 win, handing the Cardinals their third loss in four games on this homestand.
Some 23,803 hardy fans of a paid house of 35,189 showed up at Busch Stadium to watch the Cardinals and Brewers slug it out. Most of the slugging was done in the first four innings by which time Milwaukee had a 4-3 lead.
Miles Mikolas, for the second straight start against Milwaukee, separated by a week, allowed four runs, walked nobody and struck out five. The difference was last week the Cardinals scored eight runs against Milwaukee, with Mikolas hitting a two-run homer.
Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez, their leading run producer this season, had to leave in the game in the ninth when Brewers runner Lorenzo Cain's left foot made contact with Martinez's right leg and Martinez suffered a right Achilles' contusion. Cain also left the game.
