BrewDog drops off 5,000 bottles of hand sanitiser to NHS after first gel turned down

Scots craft beer giants BrewDog have delivered a van load of hand sanitiser to the NHS- after initially being turned down by health bosses.

The Aberdeenshire-based firm have been producing the gel at their distillery and have given the first load to NHS Grampian.

But last week bosses at the health board said their 'punk sanitiser' didn't meet clinical standards needed to tackle coronavirus.

At 68% alcohol, the gel breached guidelines set out by the health and safety executive.

Health bosses added that they were very "grateful" to the company and they were working with BrewDog to find an acceptable product.

The beer brand went back to the drawing board and have now produced a useable gel.

And the first batch of 5,000 bottles were dropped off to the NHS today.

BrewDog’s founder, James Watt, said it had already distributed over 100,000 bottles to local community groups.

NHS Grampian’s Head of Procurement, Steven Glass said: “In the unprecedented times we face today, we all need to step up and do what we can to help.

“It’s heartening that firms like BrewDog are choosing to play their part, and helping protect our NHS workers on the frontline across Grampian.

"This serves as yet another example of the phenomenal support we’ve received from a number of businesses in the local community.

“By working together, and continuing to follow the government advice, we will get through this pandemic.”

James said: "BrewDog have been working super closely with our friends at NHS Grampian to meet their high specification sanitiser.

“We wanted to do everything we could do to support the incredible job that the team there are doing. It has been a huge collaborative effort and we are delighted that the 80% BrewDog NHS Sanitiser is now being shipped to them this week.”

A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian added: "The BrewDog NHS sanitiser is now approved and we will get them out early next week.

"Thanks to all involved at BrewDog."
