No Brexit? Brevermind... Reddit users come up with string of names for if Britain does not leave EU

Would-be political commentators have conjured up a string of inventive names for if Brexit does not actually happen.

The idea of Britain not leaving the bloc was touted more feasibly than ever on Tuesday which prompted a range of debates on what happens next.

After a European Court of Justice adviser published his legal opinion that the UK could reverse Article 50 unilaterally, the focus on one Reddit forum turned to what the political phenomenon would be named if Brexit were reversed.

Prompting the debate, one user said: “Can we call it Brevermind?”

A range of ideas ensued which included “Breverse”, “Breunion”, “Brewind” and “Breturn”.

One more long-winded thought was “In Bretrospect this was a bad idea”

There were even some Lord of the Rings inspired ideas, such as “Breturn of the King”.

An ECJ advocate was of the opinion that the UK can unilaterally revoke Article 50 (EPA)

One person, replying to ideas such as “Bremain” and “Bregret” said: “Breturn is the best one I saw so far.”

In the same discussion, there was also a joke that Britain could “forget this whole mess” if the whole of Europe voted for the UK to win the Eurovision song contest next year.

The conversation emerged as people discussed the news from Tuesday that advocate general Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona was of the opinion that Article 50 can be overturned solely by Britain – without the permission of other EU states.

He wrote that Article 50 allows "unilateral revocation of the notification of the intention to withdraw from the EU, until such time as the Withdrawal Agreement is formally concluded",

Although this opinion is non-binding, the advocate is the top adviser to the ECJ’s judges, and the vast majority of such opinions are eventually turned into full rulings by the court.

The Government has maintained that the question of reversing Article 50 is entirely hypothetical and academic, challenging the cross-party group who brought the legal action forward at every stage.

Throughout discussions, Theresa May has been steadfast in her stance that she will honour the referendum result and Britain will leave the EU.
