Hawthorn have backed Luke Breust to usher the AFL club's youngsters through their current rebuild, with the triple-premiership forward signing on until the end of 2023.

Now 30, Breust was eligible for free agency for the second time in his career but instead opted to extend his contract with the Hawks by two years.

The durable Breust has booted 408 career goals across 220 games so far, including hauls of 40 or more in six seasons and is a dual All-Australian.

"Luke is one of the best small forwards in the game and we are thrilled he will be donning the brown and gold until at least 2023," Hawthorn head of football Rob McCartney said.

"Whilst he has been part of many memorable moments at our club over the journey we feel the role he will play as we move forward is equally important.

"With a new wave of players coming through the ranks, Luke's experience and knowledge will be essential in helping them learn the ropes of AFL football.

"He is of great character and a good example to his younger teammates of the values and standards required to build a successful and sustained career."

The Hawks are coming off a 15th-placed finish last year and lost some serious experience over the off-season, with Ben Stratton and Paul Puopolo among their retirements and Isaac Smith departing for Geelong as a free agent.
