When Brett Whiteley was a teenager, his mother took him to an exhibition by the Australian artist Lloyd Rees, which had a lasting impact. This exhibition looks at all of Whiteley’s influences, including painters, poets, writers and photographers, from his early years in Sydney through to his adult travels to Paris, Italy, Tangier, Japan and New York.

Pop art, surrealism and 20th century painter Francis Bacon all had their impact, as did brush-and-ink drawings and floating landscapes of the Japanese and Chinese masters. Each added a layer of influence to Brett Whiteley’s practice, and the art he has become famous for.
