Brett Veach says Chiefs will submit OT rule change proposal to NFL Competition Committee

Brett Veach joined “Pro Football Talk Live” to talk about the draft, Patrick Mahomes and a few other things. PFT’s Mike Florio asked Veach if the Chiefs planned to submit an overtime rule change proposal to the NFL Competition Committee at the annual league meeting at the end of March. While Veach isn’t working on the proposal himself because he’s busy with the draft and free agency, he said coach Andy Reid is working on one.

“I think everyone wants a chance for guys to do what they do and I don’t really see the downside of having that (an offensive possession for both teams in overtime)” Veach said. “Especially when you have a player like Pat Mahomes, it would have been a lot of fun, and I think a lot of people, if they weren’t already tuned in for a great game, they certainly wouldn’t have wanted to miss that overtime.”

The remarks came after the Chiefs didn’t have an opportunity to touch the ball on offense during overtime in the AFC championship game last season. With the league gravitating toward rules changes that favor offense, there’s some expectation that a rule change could be adopted ensuring both teams get at least one offensive possession. Veach added it’s something the league will figure out without his insights.
