Brett Veach’s NFL comparison for new Chiefs draft pick Darwin Thompson

We’ve already heard a bit from Chiefs scouts on their Day 3 draft picks, but now Brett Veach has weighed in. Area scout Trey Koziol revealed that he doesn’t have an exact comparison that he’d scouted for Chiefs new RB Darwin Thompson. Koziol said that he did remind him a bit of Falcons RB Devonta Freeman, but he was hard-pressed to commit to that comparison.

During Veach’s post-draft teleconference, he revealed a comparison for Thompson that he finds fitting. Thompson reminds Veach of Dion Lewis, though, there is one crucial difference.

“He has a little Dion Lewis to him,” Veach said. “Dion is a guy that has similar stature, he might be a little bit more stout than Dion. But both guys are tough runners for their size. Even though they’re small, they can do a lot of different things. Again, surprisingly very good in between the tackles.

“A lot of times these small guys are super-fast but you can’t really bang them in there too much because you worry about durability, you worry about those guys getting hurt. You’ll see when you guys see him, if you get a chance on the internet or the Twitter pages, you can kind of see some of his stuff he does in the weight room and the way he trains. He is a little fire plug. He is really strong for a small guy. I kind of think the Dion Lewis kid is kind of the first name that pops in my mind.”

Thompson has a similar play style to Lewis in the eyes of Veach, but his physique leads Veach to believe he’ll be quite durable in the NFL. Lewis is a guy who has been injured several times during his career, but he doesn’t have near the build that Thompson has. I mean, how many 5-8 200-pound guys have you seen squat 500 pounds?

That’s some pretty freaky strength, the guy may be short, but Thompson is made of muscle. So he adds a bit of a new dimension to the type of  skill set that a Dion Lewis style player brings to the table.
