Two people, including an imam, were injured in a shooting at mosque in Brest, northwestern France.
According to reports the gunman was later found dead with what is thought to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It happened at around 4.30pm local time, and the neighbourhood around the building was cordoned off by police, France 3 reports.
According to Le Telegramme, 'six or seven' shots were fired, and the victims included Imam Rachid El Jay.
The attacker escaped in a Renault Clio, witnesses said, and the city's entire police force has been mobilised.

He was later found dead, Le Telegramme reports.
Brest Prosecutor Jean-Philippe Recappe said the gunman opened fire as people left the mosque in the city's Pontanezen neigbourhood.
It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was religiously motivated, a settling of scores, or motivated by other unknown factors, Recappe told Reuters.
Unconfirmed reports state that the victims suffered leg injuries.
They were seen being given first aid at the scene, the French media states.
The mosque had not received any threats in the build-up to the shooting.
