Brentford will ‘do everything in their power’ to give fans chance to say Griffin Park farewell

Brentford have vowed to do ‘everything in their power’ to ensure fans get the chance to say farewell to Griffin Park, despite the coronavirus shutdown.

The Bees are due to leave their home of 116 years to move into the new Brentford Community Stadium in time for the start of next season.

Saturday was supposed to mark the final day of the Championship campaign, which would have seen Barnsley visit Griffin Park for the last ever game at the stadium, barring a possible play-off semi-final.

The countdown to the farewell was halted when the English professional game was suspended in March because of the pandemic and Standard Sport understands that the EFL are exploring the possibility of using ‘regional hubs’ to complete the outstanding fixtures, if it is possible to resume the season at all.

On Saturday evening, the club tweeted: “We will do everything in our power to make sure we all get the opportunity to say goodbye to our much loved home.

“Stay strong, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you a soon as we can.”

In a second tweet, they added: “It is desperately sad that we couldn’t be together today to say #FarewellGriffinPark.

“Your messages today have been heartwarming at a very challenging time.”
