Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-3 to bring the visitors back down to earth after they named their youngest-ever Premier League starting line-up.
Just three days after United’s brilliant 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals, Ruben Amorim stuck to his word by naming a much-changed team but his side took an early lead through Mason Mount.
It was one-way traffic from there, however, with Brentford levelling via a deflection from Luke Shaw and Kevin Schade’s header putting Thomas Frank’s side in front before half time. Schade added his second following the restart, with Yonna Wiisa continuing his excellent season by notching a fourth.
Alejandro Garnacho got one back late on with a spectacular finish, with Amad Diallo pulling another back in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent a 16th defeat of the Premier League season. Brentford, meanwhile, kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, while United turn their attention back to Thursday’s second leg against Athletic and attempting to reach the Europa League final.

Manchester United show spirit of youth in seven-goal thriller but Brentford continue fine form
16:36 , Harry Latham-CoyleKevin Schade was at the double as Brentford beat Manchester United 4-3 in a seven-goal Premier League thriller to keep them in the hunt for European qualification.

Elsewhere...
16:04 , Harry Latham-CoyleTwo 1-1 draws in the other 2pm-ers - Alexander Isak snatched a potentially crucial point for Newcastle down at Brighton with a late penalty, while there was nothing to split West Ham and Tottenham, to rather sum up their disappointing campaigns.

FT: Brentford 4-3 Manchester United
16:02 , Harry Latham-CoyleRuben Amorim will take the positives from that, you’d think, with his young side showing plenty of spirit to threaten a fightback. Matthijs de Ligt’s injury is a blow but all of the likely second-leg starters seemed to come through intact as attentions turn to Thursday’s meeting with Athletic Bilbao.
FT: Brentford 4-3 Manchester United
15:59 , Harry Latham-CoyleWell, it was dicier than it might have been for Brentford at the end, but their fine Premier League form continues with another valuable three points. They largely had control of the contest, that late scare aside, responding well to Mason Mount’s opener to build a lead that ultimately proved unassailable.
FULL TIME: Brentford 4-3 Manchester United
15:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Brentford 4-3 Manchester United, 90 + 7 minutes
15:56 , Harry Latham-CoyleA great effort from Yoanne Wissa, forcing Altay Bayindir to palm away after a clever corner from Bryan Mbeumo.
A quick VAR check clears a nudge on Mbeumo in the box. We’re into bonus time now.
Brentford 4-3 Manchester United, 90 + 6 minutes
15:55 , Harry Latham-CoyleThomas Frank had looked oh so calm at 4-1, but he’s beginning to fret and fuss now. His side earn a corner to waste crucial time.
GOAL! Brentford 4-3 MANCHESTER UNITED (Amad Diallo, 90 + 5 minutes)
15:54 , Harry Latham-CoyleA lovely goal from Amad Diallo and Manchester United have hope!
An unsighted Mark Flekken lets it through his legs and the visitors have a few minutes in which to chase an equaliser.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 90 + 4 minutes
15:53 , Harry Latham-CoyleHarry Maguire threatens to produce another assist, though puts too much oomph on his cross for fellow centre-half Leny Yoro to head at goal.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 90 + 2 minutes
15:50 , Harry Latham-CoyleNathan Collins bravely throws himself in front of an Amad Diallo drive, taking it on the forehead and tumbling backwards. He’s soon on his feet again.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 90 minutes
15:49 , Harry Latham-CoyleA timely tackle from Sepp van den Berg as Chido Obi shows off some of his burgeoning talent.
Seven additional minutes, a figure not received well by the home fans.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 89 minutes
15:48 , Harry Latham-CoyleTowards the final moments we hurry. Igor Thiago almost catches out Altay Bayindir as he dallies in the box.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 86 minutes
15:45 , Harry Latham-CoyleA key intervention from Leny Yoro, Yoanne Wissa surging away and looking to link up in familiar fashion with Bryan Mbeumo. The young French centre-half is back to cut it out intelligently.
Brentford 4-2 Manchester United, 84 minutes
15:43 , Harry Latham-CoyleWe have seen Manchester United pull off a couple of heists in Europe this season, but surely there is too much to do here? The band of travelling fans have lifted the volume in hope rather than expectation.
Alejandro Garnacho takes a tumble and asks for a penalty, though I don’t think Anthony Taylor had a great view of it - and it looks as if he’s gone down easily, anyway.
GOAL! Brentford 4-2 MANCHESTER UNITED (Alejandro Garnacho, 82 minutes)
15:41 , Harry Latham-CoyleA late twist? A delicious goal from Alejandro Garnacho!
A nice one-two with Christian Eriksen allows Garnacho to skip inside in a trademark manner along the edge of the area and curl delightfully past Mark Flekken.

Brentford 4-1 Manchester United, 81 minutes
15:40 , Harry Latham-CoyleInto the final 10 minutes we creep, the Brentford fans in excellent voice as their side get set to move back into the top half of the table. This will be a third win on the spin for the Londoners.
Three changes. Michael Kayode, Mikkel Damsgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter take leave as Kristoffer Ajer, Gustavo Nunes and the injury-plagued Igor Thiago come on.
Brentford 4-1 Manchester United, 77 minutes
15:37 , Harry Latham-CoyleA final change from Ruben Amorim, shuffling the deck chairs as they steam towards a 16th iceberg of the Premier League season with defeat beckoning again. Victor Lindelof on for Tyler Fredricson.

GOAL! BRENTFORD 4-1 Manchester United (Yoanne Wissa, 75 minutes)
15:34 , Harry Latham-CoyleFour! Yoanne Wissa finishes off a lovely move and Brentford are flying!
An 18th of the season for the forward, matching the tally of teammate Bryan Mbeumo. A lovely little pass from Mikkel Damsgaard to help set it up, with Michael Kayode making an excellent run and producing the right pass...but was there an offside in there? The VAR is having a look...and it’s a long check. There are two different incidents to check, first Kayode and then Wissa - still we wait...
Given! Both men onside, and the goal stands.
Brentford 3-1 Manchester United, 73 minutes
15:32 , Harry Latham-CoyleThat’s Kevin Schade’s last act of the day, with Thomas Frank and he sharing a brief (and seemingly jovial) exchange of words as the Brentford boss denies the winger a chance to chase a hat-trick. Rico Henry is on in his stead.
GOAL! BRENTFORD 3-1 Manchester United (Kevin Schade, 72 minutes)
15:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleA second for Kevin Schade and that may seal it!
Bryan Mbeumo has had a bitty afternoon but he conjures a cross here, cutting back on to his left boot. There’s a deflection on it to send it looping up, and Schade again shows his impressive aerial acumen to head home his third of the week and second of the afternoon to extend Brentford’s advantage.

Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 70 minutes
15:29 , Harry Latham-CoyleNo change to the half-time scores in any of the three Premier League games in this window, with West Ham and Tottenham still locked together and Newcastle unable as yet to respond to Brighton’s goal on the half-hour.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 68 minutes
15:27 , Harry Latham-CoyleStill no chance for a change for Brentford as Manchester United keep the pressure on. Harry Amass...way over the bar.
Right, that is a timely moment for the substitution. Enter Mathias Jensen; exit Yehor Yarmolyuk.

Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 65 minutes
15:24 , Harry Latham-CoyleBrentford are preparing their first alteration, Thomas Frank giving some final instructions to Mathias Jensen. They will have a corner to negotiate first as Amad Diallo’s shot is deflected behind.
Christian Eriksen stands over it. In it comes to the near post and in the vague area of Harry Maguire, but Brentford have it handled.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 63 minutes
15:22 , Harry Latham-CoyleNot Christian Eriksen’s best. Skied some way over the top as the Dane lets fly from distance.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 62 minutes
15:21 , Harry Latham-CoyleBryan Mbeumo jinks towards the Manchester United box but finds himself pincered by a couple of tacklers, with Manuel Ugarte taking the ball from him. Mbeumo rather cheekily appeals for a penalty; Anthony Taylor rightly gives him short shrift.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 61 minutes
15:19 , Harry Latham-CoyleThe battle between Kevin Schade and Tyler Fredricson has been to watch today, the Manchester United youngster taking his lumps yet also standing up strongly on occasion. This will be a good learning experience for him, to take a positive that reflects the visitors’ miserable Premier League position.

Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 59 minutes
15:18 , Harry Latham-CoyleA chance for Chido Obi, seldom sighted on his first Premier League start with limited service to him. A solid block from Brentford ensures the young striker can’t pounce.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 58 minutes
15:17 , Harry Latham-CoyleNot far away! A glimpse of an opportunity to Yoanne Wissa but he can’t quite connect with a ball into the box.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 57 minutes
15:16 , Harry Latham-CoyleA smattering of boos around the Gtech Community Stadium as Christian Eriksen is introduced, soon replaced by applause as the former Brentford player replaces Mason Mount.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 55 minutes
15:13 , Harry Latham-CoyleHarry Amass reacts well to cut out a clever Keane Lewis-Potter pass across field, allowing his teammates to launch into a fast-break. The accuracy just isn’t quite there, though, and Mason Mount clips the heels of Christian Norgaard to concede a free kick.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 53 minutes
15:11 , Harry Latham-CoyleA booking for Alejandro Garnacho, whistled slightly harshly for a free-kick but then throwing his toys out of the pram to ire Anthony Taylor. The referee reaches into his pocket.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 51 minutes
15:09 , Harry Latham-CoyleTwo chances in quick succession for Mason Mount, lashing a left-footed shot right into Nathan Collins and then finding the welcoming embrace of Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal.

Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 50 minutes
15:09 , Harry Latham-CoyleA missed connection between Yoanne Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, the train pulling out of the station just as the latter tries to board as the pair work together moving forward.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 48 minutes
15:07 , Harry Latham-CoyleYehor Yarmolyuk and Christian Norgaard have done a fine job in the Brentford midfield today, breaking up play really effectively.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 46 minutes
15:05 , Harry Latham-CoyleSo that’s three changes already for Ruben Amorim, all in his back five. Amad Diallo should add a bit of extra threat down the flanks.
Second half...
15:03 , Harry Latham-CoyleRight, back into it. Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo are coming on for Manchester United - it appears Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are off.
HT: Brentford 2-1 Manchester United
14:54 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt’s also half time in the two other 2pm kick offs in the Premier League. Yankubah Minteh has scored for Brighton against Newcastle - his former employers - to give the hosts a lead at the Amex Stadium, while Jarrod Bowen has levelled for West Ham against Tottenham.

HT: Brentford 2-1 Manchester United
14:52 , Harry Latham-CoyleSo Brentford ahead, then, and justly so - though the Mason Mount opener and that late Alejandro Garnacho chance show the threats that Manchester United can pose when they break quickly. It’s been a tough half at times for some of their younger players, and Matthijs de Ligt’s injury was not what Ruben Amorim would have wanted with Harry Maguire forced on early. Can they fight back in the second half?
HALF TIME: Brentford 2-1 Manchester United
14:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 45 + 3 minutes
14:49 , Harry Latham-CoyleAlejandro Garnacho puts his hands to his head - that’s a real chance passed up! A wretched attempt at it having been put in a wonderful position.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 45 minutes
14:46 , Harry Latham-CoyleTop stop! Altay Bayindir gets in the way when Christian Norgaard directs goalwards from very close range. A stumble and a tumble take him close to the goalline but he successfully gathers before it crosses. Manchester United clinging on a bit.
Three added minutes to be played at the end of the half.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 44 minutes
14:43 , Harry Latham-CoyleSloppy from Manuel Ugarte. The midfielder gives the ball away in really poor fashion and then tugs back Michael Kayode. He accepts a booking without complaint.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 42 minutes
14:42 , Harry Latham-CoyleGood save from Altay Bayindir! Brentford penetrate down the left-hand side, Kevin Schade cutting inside Tyler Fredricson and firing low towards goal. Bayindir keeps it out.
Schade again tests the young defender and secures a corner.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 40 minutes
14:40 , Harry Latham-CoyleMichael Kayode twice seems set to wind up for another launch into the Manchester United box only to instead throw short, though Keane Lewis-Potter can’t pick out a target with a resultant cross.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 38 minutes
14:38 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt’s been a lively enough game of football, though Brentford have definitely had the better of it. Manchester United’s young side feel like they need the interval.
Brentford 2-1 Manchester United, 36 minutes
14:36 , Harry Latham-CoyleDe Ligt won’t be able to continue, the Dutch defender clearly quite sore. Enter Harry Maguire, hero of Bilbao.

Harry Maguire laughs off new nickname after stunning moment in Man United win
GOAL! BRENTFORD 2-1 Manchester United (Kevin Schade, 34 minutes)
14:35 , Harry Latham-CoyleTwo in two for Kevin Schade! Manchester United are furious but the goal is given!
The visiting players halt as Matthijs de Ligt goes down with a leg injury after a clash with Yoanne Wissa, yet Anthony Taylor waves play on. And play on Brentford do, working the angles effectively to create a crossing opportunity. Schade rises like a stag out of a wheat field, high above the rest as he heads home.
Brentford 1-1 Manchester United, 33 minutes
14:33 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt was a really good reaction from Brentford to the opening goal, resetting swiftly to put the pressure on. They are beginning to push again.
Brentford 1-1 Manchester United, 30 minutes
14:31 , Harry Latham-CoyleThere wasn’t much that Altay Bayindir could have done about that goal, but the goalkeeper’s distribution has been far from ideal so far. One wonders what might have happened with Andre Onana this season had Bayindir taken more of his opportunities in the side when they have come - it feels like he hasn’t quite seized the shirt in the way that another goalkeeper might have done given Onana’s occasional errors.
GOAL! BRENTFORD 1-1 Manchester United (Luke Shaw own goal, 28 minutes)
14:29 , Harry Latham-CoyleAn equaliser! It looks like a deflection off Luke Shaw but Mikkel Damsgaard will claim it!
It all comes from a Michael Kayode long throw, with the full-back reacting well after his initial hurl is cleared. His hard work puts the ball back into the box where Damsgaard fires goalwards with a Shaw touch making certain that it is bound for the back of the net. I think the effort was bound for goal anyway...but it has gone down as a Shaw own goal!
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 26 minutes
14:26 , Harry Latham-CoyleBrentford settle back into their passing game, Keane Lewis-Potter connecting with Kevin Schade. But that’s superb defending from Tyler Fredricson, standing up to the tricks of the forward and knocking the ball out of play off him, too, to earn a throw-in.
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 24 minutes
14:24 , Harry Latham-CoyleElsewhere, meanwhile, Wilson Odobert has struck early for Tottenham against West Ham. No goals as of yet between Brighton and Newcastle.
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 24 minutes
14:23 , Harry Latham-CoyleSuch is the wind at Brentford that Ruben Amorim has added an extra layer, a jacket draped over the gilet already sported by the ever-fashionable Manchester United manager.
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 21 minutes
14:21 , Harry Latham-CoyleA good defensive header from Kobbie Mainoo allows Manchester United to launch another forward movement at speed, with Manuel Ugarte niftily working his feet well. Mason Mount is squeezed out, though.

Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 19 minutes
14:19 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt’s just cooled a little in London today, the wind getting up to add to the chill after a balmy week of weather across the United Kingdom. The surface at the Gtech Community stadium looks immaculate.
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 18 minutes
14:17 , Harry Latham-CoyleBrentford are not happy when referee Anthony Taylor whistles for a free kick when the hosts had seemingly secured a corner after the ball burst free from a thicket of bodies.
Brentford 0-1 Manchester United, 16 minutes
14:16 , Harry Latham-CoyleWell well well. Just as against Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United have had to soak up a bit of early pressure but lead in the opening stages. Brentford will be ticking after a promising start.
GOAL! Brentford 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (Mason Mount, 15 minutes)
14:15 , Harry Latham-CoyleA first Premier League goal of the season for Mason Mount!
Wonderful work from Alejandro Garnacho in the build-up, and Manchester United strike early. A quick break from halfway after a poor clearance from Mark Flekken affords Garnacho time and space, and Mount has the simple job of side-footing home.
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 12 minutes
14:12 , Harry Latham-CoyleThomas Tuchel has made his way to the Gtech Community Stadium, with the England manager casting his eye over a couple of current squad contenders and perhaps a few more who will be in time.
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 10 minutes
14:10 , Harry Latham-CoyleA first stretch of the legs for Chido Obi, Manchester United’s youngest Premier League starter. Nathan Collins shuts him down easily and then draws a free kick.

Manchester United name their youngest line-up in Premier League history
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 9 minutes
14:09 , Harry Latham-CoyleKobbie Mainoo, at 20, is a comparative veteran to some of his teammates today - though it can be easy to forget just how young the midfielder is. How will Ruben Amorim view his best role looking ahead to next season? This is a good chance for him to produce a strong performance.
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 7 minutes
14:07 , Harry Latham-CoyleA soft foul from Yoanne Wissa on the halfway line gives Manchester United a chance to settle a bit.

Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 6 minutes
14:06 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt’s all Brentford in these opening skirmishes. Thomas Frank’s side are zipping the ball about with purpose and precision with this young Manchester United side struggling to deal with them. Altay Bayindir helps them out by claiming a poor cross from Yehor Yarmolyuk.
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 4 minutes
14:05 , Harry Latham-CoyleSo nearly an own goal! Luke Shaw gets himself in a tangle and almost heads into his own net with Altay Bayindir totally stranded!
Another Brentford corner, played short initially and then headed away by the visitors. But back come Brentford, and that’s a glorious chance for Kevin Schade, just unable to get enough purchase on the ball to turn it into the net.
Brentford 0-0 Manchester United, 2 minutes
14:03 , Harry Latham-CoyleNot the best start from Altay Bayindir, lumping his first kick long and right the way through to Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal. Bryan Mbeumo appears to have begun as the forward-most of the front three for the hosts, though he, Kevin Schade and Yoanne Wissa may swap about.
KICK OFF!
14:00 , Harry Latham-CoyleUp and running at the Gtech Community Stadium.
You can't win anything with kids...
13:47 , Harry Latham-CoyleThis line-up today is the youngest ever named by Manchester United in the Premier League, with an average age of 22 years and 270 days, according to Opta. Chido Obi is the youngest player to start for the club in the Premier League.

Manchester United's remaining fixtures
13:45 , Harry Latham-CoyleThings look, perhaps, a touch tougher for Manchester United, even if the Premier League is far from their focus:

16 May: Chelsea (a)

Games to come for Brentford...
13:35 , Harry Latham-CoyleIt’s a fun finish for Brentford, with relegated Ipswich, a London derby against Fulham and a revived Wolves their business for the rest of the season after today. That Fulham clash could be pivotal with a congested group of clubs just out of the chase for Champions League places:

Edwin Van der Sar hoping lightning strikes twice for Manchester United
13:15 , Harry Latham-CoyleEdwin Van der Sar experienced Europa League heartbreak as chief executive of Ajax in 2017 when Manchester United triumphed in the final.
Now, he hopes his former club can find similar success in the competition eight years later.
Jose Mourinho’s first campaign at Old Trafford ended by winning Europe’s second-tier competition, which took precedence over the Premier League towards the end of the campaign that the Red Devils stumbled home in sixth.
The Portuguese’s decision paid off as United lifted the Europa League and sealed Champions League qualification by winning the Stockholm showpiece 2-0 against Ajax.
The ex-United goalkeeper sees similarities to the current situation under Ruben Amorim, whose side entered the weekend 14th.

Thomas Frank insists room for improvement despite Nottingham Forest win
13:05 , Harry Latham-CoyleA 2-0 away win over a Champions League-chasing side? You’d have thought Thomas Frank would have been delighted with Brentford’s performance at Nottingham Forest, but the manager only rated his side’s showing as a seven out of ten as he urged them to finish strongly this season.
"It was a good away performance,” Frank told the BBC. “Very solid. I think it is a big strength that we go to a difficult place against a team who have been fantastic all season.
"It was only seven out of 10 in my opinion. We were very strong defensively and gave little away. We should have kept the ball better in the second half. Credit to the boys.
"We had more possession and we went 1-0 up, then 2-0. Naturally they pressed us more. We knew the counters, we had to be very good and close down those situations. We needed to be good enough to play behind them.
"I think everything is possible. There are four games left. We'll try our best to win them."

Team news on the way...
12:42 , Harry Latham-CoyleRight, just how heavily rotated with Manchester United be? Has Thomas Frank got something different up his sleeve? We should know in the next five minutes or so...
Thomas Frank wary of visitors' threat
12:30 , Harry Latham-CoyleThomas Frank insists Brentford will not be deceived by Manchester United's lowly position in the Premier League when they clash in west London today.
Ruben Amorim's men are 10 points below the Bees in 14th place, with their Portuguese boss even stating in December that they face a battle against relegation, although they are now safe from the drop.
However, they are thriving in the Europa League, winning 3-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the first leg of the semi-finals, and it is that form which concerns Frank.
"The performances in Europe show that there is potential, and actually in the Premier League they have not got what they have played to," the Brentford manager said.
"There are a lot of games with high expected goals and chances and they have deserved more.
"It's Man United - they are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They will put a very competitive team out on Sunday.
"It's a team that is very structured. They know what they want to do offensively and defensively."

Brentford vs Manchester United LIVE
10:29 , Harry Latham-CoyleThe end of the Premier League season is drawing ever nearer - mercifully for Manchester United. A tricky domestic campaign has been salvaged, rather, by a remarkable run in the Europa League, with a spot in the final looking close to secure after a fabulous win in Bilbao.
Brentford will provide tough opposition ahead of the semi-final second leg as Ruben Amorim’s side attempt to build momentum - though the manager has made it clear where his priorities lie.
Kick off in London is at 2pm BST.
