Manchester City earned a valuable three points to get their title race back on track as Pep Guardiola’s side banished the memories of midweek to earn a 1-0 win over Brentford.
City drew 2-2 with Monaco on Wednesday having conceded a late equaliser and Guardiola’s men were put under pressure by a surging Brentford side as the Gtech Community Stadium.
Erling Haaland continued his impressive form by forcing his way through the Bees’ centre-back to power home the only goal of the game in the ninth minute and City were in cruise control at half-time.
However, Brentford - aided by an injury to Rodri - turned the match around and piled pressure on City’s defence. The former Premier League champions were clinging on through the final 20 minutes but Gianluigi Donnarumma secured another clean sheet and City are now just three points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports:
19:03 , Mike Jones"Good, they had one chance in the first half, one duel that we lost. But part of that, more corners, more throw-ins, more actions and that's always there in the Premier League. We played an outstanding first half that is close to our best in many, many things. The problem is when you don't score goals and the chances we had Kelleher made some good saves. It's more difficult in the Premier league in the second half we're 1-0 and this happened.
"In general really pleased with this month since the [Manchester] United game grew up a lot in many, many things and hopefully come back healthy the players from the national team."
Keith Andrews' reaction
19:03 , Mike JonesBrentford boss Keith Andrews, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "If you look at the 90 minutes one team took their very good chance, we didn't take ours. I feel we restricted them to very few clear cut chances.
"By the nature of the way they play they will try to pull you out of position. We dealt with that pretty well. In the second half we managed to create a bit more chaos and unnerve them a bit."
Reaction from Collins
18:47 , Mike JonesBrentford captain Nathan Collins told Sky Sports:
"Probably first half we were a bit too passive, going through the motions, letting them have too much space.
"They were getting too close to our box, in and around it. In the second half we were a bit more aggressive on the press, got higher up, pressed them higher.
"When they did have those spells it was around the halfway line and that's fine. Created one or two chances, on the day you need to take that to get a result here."
Haaland's scoring run
18:42 , Mike JonesErling Haaland has scored in nine consecutive appearances for club and country (six in two for Norway, 10 in seven for Manchester City) - the longest scoring run of his career.

On the break

City have shown resilience
15:12 , Mike Jones“We’ve shown resilience this season,” said Nathan Ake ahead of today’s match against Brentford.
“Maybe from the outside a lot of people don’t think we can make it and stuff like that, but we believe in ourselves - we know we have a lot of different players and staff so obviously it’s going to be new.
“What we’ve shown so far is that we’re willing to work and willing to fight. We’ve had some good results and we’re unbeaten in the last few games - hopefully we can keep it going.”
Guardiola gives Rodri update
15:06 , Mike JonesPep Guardiola explained why Nico Gonzalez is so important to Manchester City as Rodri continues to rediscover full fitness and form.
“Rodri could not play three days before because his knee was in a bad condition,” Guardiola said about the Monaco match.
“That’s why Nico in those [last] 30 minutes [against Monaco], he was the player that won more balls recovered, and we concede less in the transition, than when Rodri was playing in the first half.
“I’d love to tell you yes because Rodri wasn’t on the pitch we conceded the goal but I can’t prove that because if I felt it, Rodri would be on the pitch.
“Rodri cannot play in certain moments and 90 minutes for many games and Nico played really good against Burnley and he’s learning and improving. We need him.
“Rodri can’t sustain yet the rhythm for games for 90 minutes, he made an incredible effort in the week with Manchester United, Napoli and especially Arsenal.
“I try to protect my players. Sometimes I want the best players there but I have to protect the players.”
Having Haaland is a dream
15:00 , Mike Jones“Can you tell me one club who wouldn’t want Haaland as a dream?” Pep Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference.
“I understand it’s a dream for all the clubs in the world, if he wasn’t at City it would be a dream to have Erling.
“He has a long contract here and is doing very well, scoring a lot of goals.
“The team help him a lot and are able to make actions to score goals. When he plays better we have more chances, always I want the team to concede less and create more. Then after it’s only a game.
“Football you can create more, concede less and lose the game. It’s the only sport in the world.”

Andrews on Brentford's win over Man United
14:54 , Mike JonesThe Bees manager explored why his side were successful against Manchester United in their last outing.
"It was a deserved win," said Andrews. "I thought the attitude of the players was excellent - the belief, the courage, the conviction.
“How we started the game and, ultimately, finished the game, the way we had to navigate through what can be tricky waters at times, it was excellent.
“Our approach, everything we did with the ball and without the ball... there were so many positives.”

Kelleher on settling at Brentford
14:42 , Mike JonesFormer Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been speaking to club media about settling into his role as the No.1 at Brentford following his summer switch.
“I’m still settling in and getting to know the team and my team-mates which will take a bit of time, but I can feel it getting stronger and stronger," Kelleher revealed.
“At Liverpool, I would play and then come out of the team and not play again for a while; here, I’m playing week in, week out and it’s taken some getting used to, but I’m really happy to be doing it and I’m getting there, for sure.”

Savinho on playing under Guardiola
14:36 , Mike JonesAfter signing his new contract at City, Savinho explained why he is excited about remaining at the club and how Pep Guardiola has improved him as a player.
“I think I’ve improved a lot,” he explained. “In this first season, working with the staff and with Pep, I’m really happy to have developed under him.
“I think I’ve improved a lot tactically. Technically too — I understand the game better, I’ve learnt to read it better, to know what it asks in certain moments.
“I will give my best to help Manchester City win trophies, which is the most important thing. I hope to put my name in the club’s history by winning trophies.”

Savinho on his new deal
14:30 , Mike JonesThe Manchester City midfielder said: “I’m really happy and my family is also very happy. I feel fulfilled.
“My dream since I was little was always to play for Manchester City, and I managed to achieve that.
“And now, extending my contract here makes it even more special. I feel really proud and I hope to continue and be very happy here at Manchester City.”
Savinho signs new deal with Manchester City as future squad takes shape
14:24 , Mike JonesSavinho has signed a six-year contract with Manchester City as the former Premier League champions have tied down the former Tottenham target into the 2030s.

City have made 11 signings in 2025 while Savinho follows fellow youngsters Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly in putting pen to paper on an extended deal.

How can Brentford beat Man City?
14:18 , Mike Jones"It's us as a club and our team against theirs,” Keith Andrews said.
“It's about the players and how we can prepare them to go into a really, really tough game against a top, top manager and top players who have world-class ability.
"It's about how we can nullify that and stop that, as well as cause them real problems.
"Having said that, it's not lost on me that I'll be in the opposite dugout to one of the greats."
Keith Andrews on influence of Pep Guardiola
14:12 , Mike Jones"I don't know many who wouldn't have taken inspiration from such an innovative manager," said Brentford manager Keith Andrews in the build-up to today’s game.
"He's probably been the best manager of the last 15 years, in the modern era; the way he's coached the game, the way he's changed the way the game is perceived and played at different clubs and in different countries.
"I've come through my coaching journey and coaching courses, and his name was pretty prevalent throughout those. To say I have ultimate respect for him is an understatement."

Can City bounce back from Monaco draw?
14:06 , Mike JonesPep Guardiola refused to be drawn on Monaco’s controversial late penalty after seeing his Manchester City side pegged back in a 2-2 Champions League draw against Monaco during the week.
“In football you have to win with the result,” Guardiola said about the midweek draw. “If you analyse the game there were many things that were really good. Step by step we will be better but we had many chances.
“We conceded almost nothing. We created chances, they defended so deep and tight, that it wasn’t expecting for the way they play but we adjusted and we played really good. When it’s close, you have to defend and we take the point.”

The changing of the guard at Man City that could mould Pep Guardiola’s legacy
14:00 , Richard JollyAs Pep Guardiola sought to explain a record low, he provided an explanation that could be interpreted in different ways.
Manchester City had just 32 percent of possession at the Emirates Stadium, the lowest share any of his teams had ever enjoyed (Guardiola, who said he suffered, endured the 68 percent of the match when Arsenal had the ball). “We are a transition team,” he argued.
Tactically, that feels truer than ever. They have fewer pure passers of the ilk of Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva. Their front three can feature fast, direct attackers like Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku, not midfielders masquerading as wingers and false nines.

Bees boss Keith Andrews must decide whether to stick with the 4-3-3 that got a result against Manchester United last weekend or revert to the 3-5-2 that he has used against tougher opposition like Chelsea. Kristoffer Ajer would likely come in for Dango Ouattara if he decides on the latter.
Predicted Brentford XI: Kelleher; Kayode, Collins, Van den Berg, Hickey; Henderson, Yarmolyuk; Ouattara, Damsgaard, Schade; Thiago

Brentford vs Man City
13:30 , Mike JonesManchester City travel to west London to take on Brentford this afternoon looking to hang on to the coattails of the Premier League’s high-flyers.
City currently sit eighth, six points behind new league leaders Arsenal after beating Burnley 5-1 last weekend in a match that was harder work than the final scoreline suggests.
Pep Guardiola’s men then endured Champions League disappointment in midweek as Eric Dier’s controversial 90th-minute penalty earned Monaco a point despite the unstoppable Erling Haaland scoring twice more in the principality to take his goal tally to a faintly ludicrous 17 in 10 games for club and country this season.
New Brentford boss Keith Andrews had seen his side struggle at the start of this season, languishing down near the relegation zone, but an impressive 3-1 triumph over the hapless Man United last weekend came as a boon and they’ll hope to spring an upset over the blue half of Manchester today.
Good afternoon!
12:12 , Mike JonesWelcome to The Independent’s coverage of today’s Premier League action which sees Manchester City travel to Brentford in the hopes of closing the gap on the league leaders.
Liverpool’s last-minute loss to Chelsea on Saturday means that Arsenal now top the table and the reigning Premier League champions have questions that need answering over the upcoming international break.
Their downturn in form has blown the title race wide open and Pep Guardiola’s side must now capitalise. City come into the match six points behind the Gunners but can cut that to three with a victory over the Bees.
We’ll have all the updates, team news and more throughout the afternoon so stick with us as we build up to kick off at 4.30pm.
