Brentford striker Neal Maupay was expected to return to training on Tuesday after being sent home from the club’s pre-season tour last weekend due to to the ongoing uncertainty over his future.

Maupay is attracting strong interest from Premier League sides this summer, in particular Aston Villa, Brighton and Sheffield United, after scoring 25 goals in the Championship last season.

There is yet to be a concrete bid for the Frenchman, but clubs have made initial enquires and the situation came to a head on Saturday when the 22-year-old was withdrawn from Brentford’s squad for their friendly with Dynamo Kiev in Austria.

Maupay was allowed to return to France for three days as he was not in the right frame of mind to play, but was expected to report for training in west London on Tuesday.

Brentford are under no financial pressure to sell the striker, and want him to stay, meaning they can demand a fee of around £20million.
