Brentford stars to agree wage cuts amid ongoing coronavirus pandemic

Brentford players are set to agree across the board pay cuts to put them all on a maximum of £5,000-a-week.

It is understood the Championship promotion-chasers have been discussing the implications of the coronavirus with the first team squad and the huge financial implications on EFL clubs.

The Brentford players were chasing a play-off spot before all football was put on hold and, in front three Said Benrahma, Bryan Mbeumo and Ollie Watkins, they have got some of the most sought after stars in the division.

But it is believed they have become the first club to agree to pay cuts with discussions ongoing about wage deferrals between the EFL and the Professional Footballers' Association.

It has been done to help the club in a time of crisis especially as Brentford owner Matthew Benham made his fortune in the betting industry which has been particularly hard hit with no live sport.

It comes just after Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe announced he was taking a pay cut and Scotland boss Steve Clarke also took a 10 per cent pay cut.

The Bees had been enjoying a standout season under coach Thomas Frank, prior to football being suspended.

They currently sit fourth in the table, and despite being 10 points off the top two, had been well placed to secure another play-off spot as they bid to bring Premier League football to the club's new stadium.

Joint-top scorers in the division, and with the second-best defence, they have a five point cushion on seventh place Bristol City, with nine games remaining.

However, they, like the rest of English football, are currently left in the middle of uncertainty over what will happen next.
