Brentford complete first signing of summer as Champions League midfielder pens five-year deal

Brentford have confirmed the signing of midfielder Frank Onyeka from Midtjylland after receiving confirmation of a work permit over the weekend.

The Nigeria international has joined on a five-year deal for a fee of about £8m from the Danish club in which owner Matthew Benham is also majority shareholder and will bring top level experience to the squad having featured in the Champions League last season.

Onyeka, who completed a medical yesterday, will spend ten days in quarantine before being allowed to join in with training.

The 23-year-old joined Midtjylland from Nigerian club Ebedei as a teenager and scored 17 goals in 123 appearances for the Superliga club.

Head coach Thomas Frank said: “I am looking forward to getting Frank in the building. We think he is a strong addition to the squad, and we are looking forward to working with him. He is a very dynamic player.

“Frank plays as an eight in our system, he is very good at getting from box to box and will be valuable to us when we don’t have the ball.

"He has come from the Danish league and was one of the best midfield players in that league, we think he has the potential to develop further. All the coaches here are looking forward to working with Frank and pushing him to a higher level.”

Brentford have also been linked with a move for Celtic centre back Kristoffer Ajer.

The Norway international has been left out of the Scottish club's squad for the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland.
