Brenden Aaronson leaves Leeds United as summer exodus gathers pace under Daniel Farke

Brenden Aaronson will not be returning to Leeds United for pre-season training on Monday after sealing a move to Union Berlin. The American will be joining the Bundesliga outfit on a season-long loan deal as he becomes the third high profile player to leave in a matter of days after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

He follows Robin Koch and Diego Llorente out of the exit door after their respective switches to Eintract Frankfurt and Roma. Aaronson only joined the Whites last summer as he made the £25m switch from Red Bull Salzburg, but, despite making 40 appearances in all competitions, he found the going difficult at Elland Road.

As such, he will be looking to reignite his career in the German capital with Union Berlin, who finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season and will compete in the Champions League group stages this season.

"Union's path and the success of the last few years did not go unnoticed in either the USA, Austria or England,” Aaronson said after joining the club. “Somehow, you always heard something about them.

“A year ago, I wouldn't have believed that I would be here and able to play in the Champions League with Union. I'm looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and want to help us have another successful season."

Oliver Ruhnert, Union's managing director, added: "Brenden's commitment has made us very happy, he is a type of player we don't have who will be good for our attacking game. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of international experience and will complement our squad at a high level.”
