Brendan Rodgers to attend Billy McNeill funeral as former Celtic boss prepares to pay respects to an icon

Brendan Rodgers will return to Scotland for the first time since he dramatically quit Celtic when he attends Billy McNeill ’s funeral today.

The Irishman shocked Hoops fans when he left Glasgow for Leicester City in February.

But he will be back in the country on Friday when he joins the hundreds of mourners as iconic former Celtic captain and manager McNeill is laid to rest.

The funeral takes place in city centre church St Aloysius where the great and the good of Scottish football and society as a whole.

Billy McNeill won 31 trophies, including the first British success in the European Cup - an achievement that cannot be eclipsed (SNS Group)

Celtic FC will stand with the likes of Rangers, who are expected to have representatives at the Requiem Mass while other figures such as Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has also said he will attend the service for the Lisbon Lion .

Rodgers is ready to pay respects to McNeill after he headed north following his Leicester media duties on Thursday.

The 46-year-old said: "It is a sad day when you are aware of Billy’s history as a player and manager.

"He was the spirit and heartbeat of an iconic team – the Lisbon Lions, the first team in Britain to win the European Cup and he was the leader of that team.

"He was an iconic symbol for Celtic supporters who played for the team and went on to manage them."

The funeral begins at 11.30am before the cortege heads to Celtic Park where thousands of fans and mourners will line the streets.
