Brendan Rodgers sparks Celtic Hotline troll as Rangers naysayers warn rivals the rules are rewritten – Hotline

Brendan Rodgers and his return to Celtic. A never ending source of bickering.

The Hotline doesn’t need much to spark a bit of backwards and forwards between punters and not even a massive Scotland Euro qualifier in Norway can divert the focus of some. Rodgers’ decision to return having walked away from the club just over four years ago and has had the tongues wagging all week.

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “With people going on about Rodgers coming back for a big pay day, is he any different to any other manager or player? We’re no different in our own lives. And I don’t think for one minute Celtic is the biggest financial offer on the table for him. Clubs like Leeds were in for him and they have far bigger finances at their disposal. I think it’s a lot of worried Rangers fans and Celtic fans who won’t forgive him for leaving before. If that’s the case, there’s plenty of fans waiting to take your season ticket.”

“George Wilson’s comments on yesterday’s Hotline about Rodgers jumping ship and only being successful against a weak Rangers brought fierce and differing responses.

Firstly, Andrew Adams, Kirkcaldy, said: “At least Celtic supporters won’t need to worry about Brendan jumping ship this time around, he’s finished in the Premier League. No so-called big club will be interested in him, he might leave, but it might not be his choice, his record in Europe, with every club he’s been with, including Celtic last time, is abysmal, being in pot 4 won’t help either.”

But Brian Mitchell, Glasgow, led the retorts and said: “Is George for real? Brendan only successful in Scotland? Only for Gerrard’s slip, he could have won the English Premier League, two top-six finishes with Leicester, yeah definitely a flop.

“Oh and walking away George? You should know about that when most of your team deserted the club in their darkest hour 2012. Ring a bell?”

Liam Birney, Paisley, said: “George rarely focussed on his own team but has a PHD in Celtic analysis says Rangers were just back in the league and that’s the reason Celtic were successful. Does he not realise that Celtic won an unprecedented Quadruple Treble with Rangers back in the league?”

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, continued: “Motormouth Mr Wilson claimed Rodgers only did well against a championship-type player Rangers. Is that not what Mick Beale is signing now?”

Talking of Rangers signings, the Ibrox club added striker Sam Lammers to their squad this week. But Kevin Kean, Inchinnan, said: “A bewildering signing. Has Beale ever seen him play? Almost certainly not. “He’s been loaned out, goal return lamentable, plus a staggering four-year deal. Not likely going to make anything when moved on and he won’t be there for four years.”

The death of Gordon McQueen brought a sombre tone to the Hotline and also joyous memories of the big man’s heroics for his country. Neil Renton, Edinburgh, “That’s such a shame we’ve just lost the legend that was Gordon. Here’s hoping the Scotland team gets a result in Norway that does the big man proud.”

Wullie Graham, Bristol, continued: “The word legend is banded around unnecessarily these days. Big Gordon became a true legend when he rose and blasted that header past Ray Clemence. He sent 80,000 Scottish fans delirious with joy on that scorching day 4th June 1977.

“I will never forget that day, being there was one of the best days of my life. RIP big man and thank you for your part in that wonderful day. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Jim McFarlane emailed: “RIP Big Man. The best memory. Wembley 1977. The day you went into orbit with a bullet header on way to victory in a game with so, so many memories.”
