Brendan Rodgers sent 'clever' Harvey Barnes transfer message amid Liverpool rumours

Harvey Barnes put an end to any transfer speculation on Thursday by penning a new long-term contract with Leicester City.

The winger had been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer but he has committed his future to the Foxes until 2025.

Former Premier League and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has described the contract extension as a 'wise move' by Brendan Rodgers' side after Liverpool were credited with transfer interest.

He told Football Insider : “It’s a clever move.

“Leicester, in the last few seasons, have emerged as genuine Champions League contenders.

“Liverpool are the type of team that Leicester are now competing with, so they don’t want to be selling to their rivals.

“They especially don’t want to sell a quality player like Barnes, who has developed and really flourished under Brendan Rodgers.

"It always frustrates me when teams let their best players run into the last 12 or 18 months on a contract.

“I think the sooner you can tie these top players up, the better.”

Liverpool have had a rather quiet transfer window so far with RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate the only player to come through the door.

Instead, Liverpool have focused on retention and tied their own players to fresh, long-term contracts.

Virgil van Dijk followed Alisson, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold in penning a new deal last week.

Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah are expected to be next in line.
