Brendan Rodgers sends transfer message to James Maddison amid Manchester United interest

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has told James Maddison to concentrate on 'flourishing' with the Foxes amid interest from Manchester United.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are optimistic about signing the 22-year-old midfielder.

Maddison fits the bill for United as they look to sign young British talents while the Coventry-born attacker is a boyhood fan of the Old Trafford club.

Reports have suggested that the Foxes are keen to tie down the former Norwich City man to a long-term contract but Rodgers had told Leicestershire Live that he isn't privy to conversations over a new deal.

“There’s nothing to add to that,” Rodgers said at his press conference on Wednesday when asked about the possibility of a new contract for the youngster. “The club hasn't indicated anything as of yet.

“He’s a player that we very much want to keep here. He’s a very talented young player that has a lot of development to make over the coming years.

“He recognises this is a great place for him to be, and gives him that opportunity to flourish and develop.

“Anything contractual, that will be between James’ representatives and the club. For me, my job is to coach them and make them better.”

Maddison is under contract at the King Power Stadium until 2023 and Leicester are expected to demand a similar fee to the £80m that took Harry Maguire to the club in the summer.
