Brendan Rodgers saw something 'absolutely incredible' during Celtic vs Newcastle

Brendan Rodgers saw something that was "absolutely incredible" during Celtic's hammering of Newcastle yesterday.

The Northern Irishman's side came away with an impressive performance and result as they thumped the English Premier League outfit with two goals in the first half and two in the second.

Arne Engels, Johnny Kenny, Yang and Liam Scales found the net as optimism grew for the season ahead and gave the manager plenty to be optimistic about.

On the flip side, it will not have made for pleasant viewing for Newcastle supporters.

However, Rodgers had plenty of words of encouragement for their fan base after their own impressive showing off the park, branding their following "absolutely incredible."

He also reckons Eddie Howe's team team will be absolutely fine once the competitive stuff comes around.

"I primarily focus on my own team but, two weeks ahead, you start that little bit earlier," the Celtic boss told said. "Newcastle will get there. They're obviously building up.

"But we're still playing against really top players who, if they're playing two 45s, will certainly be at a good level for 45 minutes or want to be.

"It's great for a club like Newcastle to come here. You've seen their support. It was absolutely incredible, which made for a great atmosphere in the stadium with nearly 50,000 here."

Howe admitted post-match that Celtic was a test that perhaps came too soon for his men at this early stage of their pre-season.

"We take a load from that. That was a really good test for us," he told Newcastle club media.

"This was a test that maybe came a little bit too early for us.

"We've had a long week in Austria. Not making excuses by the way but the lads came into the game jaded, slightly.

"It was a great workout for us. I think Celtic played very well.

"I thought we played well in phases of the game, we created chances and should have scored a couple of goals.

"Overall, I think the team will be better for the game."
