Brendan Rodgers reveals private phone call with Ralf Rangnick before he accepted Manchester United job

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he spoke with Ralf Rangnick on the phone during his years spent at Liverpool.

Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking last weekend, there was naturally an abundance of names linked with replacing Solskjaer at the helm at Old Trafford and Rodgers was among the bookies' favourites for the vacant position alongside Mauricio Pochettino.

However, United announced that they would move for an interim replacement instead and they appointed Rangnick on Monday.

Rangnick has joined United on an initial six-month coaching deal and he'll move into a consultancy role after that for two years.

Rodgers, who was heavily linked with replacing Solskjaer permanently, was asked about Rangnick's appointment on Monday.

"I think they have appointed a very experienced man in football, both in his role as a sporting director and as a coach," Rodgers said.

"I don't know Ralf personally. I came across him when I was at Liverpool and we had a phone conversation.

"And then at Celtic, I played against his Red Bull Leipzig team, but he's clearly a very, very experienced guy who is very well thought of in the game, and he will come in and offer that experience and that stability to the club and they will assess it from there."

It's hoped that Rangnick will be able to take charge of United for Thursday's game against Arsenal at Old Trafford.
