Brendan Rodgers reveals Celtic transfer near miss after finally landing top target at Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers has celebrated signing Ademola Lookman for Leicester City — and revealed he once wanted the wide man at Celtic.

The former Charlton kid moved to Everton in 2017 and then to Bundesliga upstarts RB Leipzig, from where he is now on loan to the Foxes after a Deadline Day move.

Lookman looked like one of England's brightest young prospects when he earned 11 Under-21 caps.

There's a sense his career is still yet to fully catch fire after spending last season at Fulham.

But Rodgers is hoping to get the best out of him as he revealed he's been tracking the 23-year-old's progress since he was in the Parkhead dugout, and even earlier.

At one point he saw Lookman as a key piece of his all-conquering Celtic side but was unable to get a deal done before Everton moved in at the end of his first season in Scotland.

Speaking ahead of a return to league action against Manchester City, Rodgers said: "I’m really excited about working with Ade. He’s a top talent.

"I wanted to take him to Celtic when he was at Charlton. I was aware of him when he was 15.

"He has all the tools, he has a great dribbling ability, how he views the game, he has an eye for a goal.

"My hope is that this environment will give him a chance to flourish. Hopefully he can find a home here. I have no doubt the supporters will be excited by him."
