Brendan Rodgers recommends Derek McInnes to SFA as Scotland manager hunt takes fresh twist

Brendan Rodgers has thrown his support behind Derek McInnes to become the new Scotland manager.

The Leicester boss has spoken to the SFA and has backed the Dons boss to succeed Alex McLeish, with Scotland's next game under just one month away when they take on Cyprus in a European qualifier.

McInnes is also also believed to have major backing from the SFA, but the endorsement of the Reds manager by Rodgers has only strengthened his case.

The ex-Parkhead boss and McInnes are close and Rodgers is in no doubt he is the man to succeed Alex McLeish.

The pair’s relationship goes back to when Rodgers was Liverpool manager and he sent Danny Ward up on loan. That bond was strengthened when Ryan Christie went to Pittodrie.

McInnes is high on the SFA chief executive’s shortlist, which also includes Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke, Sunderland’s Jack Ross, Scotland Under-21 boss Scot Gemmill and David Moyes.

The Dons boss, who has said he would like to become the Scotland boss in the future, still has one year left on his contract and Aberdeen would be entitled to compensation.

The Pittodrie board are currently looking at extending the 47-year-old’s deal but are also aware an approach from Hampden could be in the pipeline.

The SFA are likely to make an approach for their top man within the next fortnight and the indication is that will happen once the domestic season is over.
