Brendan Rodgers reacts to former Celtic transfer chief Lee Congerton’s move as John Park prepares to join Sunderland

Brendan Rodgers has hailed the appointment of Lee Congerton as Leicester City’s new head of recruitment.

One of Scottish football’s worst-kept secrets was confirmed on Saturday when Celtic announced Congerton had left the club shortly before Leicester welcomed him to the King Power.

It was another reunion for Rodgers and the 45-year-old, who first met as Chelsea youth coaches.

And the Foxes boss is delighted to again work with Congerton, who it has been reported will work within the existing set-up with no radical overhaul of the recruitment department.

The Welshman’s record at Celtic was the source of much criticism but Rodgers has no doubts over his ability.

He said: “I know Lee from my time at Chelsea and he’s always produced very good players.

“He knows what the club expect here, what they want, and I think it will be a really good appointment for the club.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail report John Park is poised to join Sunderland on a five-year deal.

Neil Lennon was keen to bring the talent-spotter back to Celtic Park if he was to land the job permanently.

But Park, who was instrumental in signing the likes of Virgil van Dijk when he was chief scout at the Glasgow club between 2007 and 2016, has dealt the Irishman a blow.
