Brendan Rodgers opens the door for Celtic to land Filip Benkovic again

Brendan Rodgers has hinted Filip Benkovic could return to Celtic for a second loan spell next season.

The Croat has been excellent in green and white but has also battled a host of injuries.

Leicester boss Rodgers brought Benkovic to Celtic on a season-long loan but remained non-committal about the prospect of the 21-year-old making an impact with the Foxes next season.

It was expected the former Dinamo Zagreb star would return to his parent club and fight for regular game time in the Premier League under his former Parkhead boss.

The £12million signing has made 25 appearances at Parkhead but has only played three times since December.

The Irishman says Leicester will "take a look" at Benkovic but offered no guarantees.

That will be music to ears of Celtic supporters with impending free agent Dedryck Boyata set for the Parkhead exit door.

Rodgers told the Leicester Mercury : “We will have a look in the summer. The idea was to get him out on loan where he can get experience and feel pressure.

“He obviously has been playing at Celtic with 60,000 plus and the weight of expectation to win every game, so he was going to be okay with pressure. That is what he has done, not so much the second half of the season, but we will take him back and have a look to see where we go from there.”

Celtic face a summer rebuild and are set for four rounds of Champions League qualifying as the look to return to European football's premier club competition.
