Brendan Rodgers opens Filip Benkovic Celtic door as defender could be set for January move

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Filip Benkovic could go out on loan in January, potentially opening the door for a return to Celtic.

The Croatian international spent last season on loan at Celtic Park and hasn't made a single appearance for Leicester since returning.

Rodgers insisted: "He's been good

"He played away at Tottenham with the Under-23s [last week]. He’ll play in some more of their games.

“For Filip, it’s a very difficult position for him. He’s fighting every day to be fitter and stronger.

"We’ll see where he’s at in January, whether he needs games with more pressure, or whether he stays and is that support player should anything happen."

That could open the door to a Celtic return, as Rodgers has previously made clear that he'd prefer any loan move to be a return to Glasgow.

He told MailSport shortly after being appointed: " Filip's situation is one I'll look at.

"But there's no doubt that if I want him to go out on loan again, I'd want him to go to Celtic.

"Of course, I'll have a conversation with the player - I think he's a big talent.

"But we've got four really good centre-backs here with big experience in Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Wes Morgan and Caglar Soyuncu.

" Filip is a top-class young player but if he goes on loan again, I'd love him to return to Celtic.

"He needs to play and Celtic has been a great experience for him.""
