Brendan Rodgers reveals the factor Rangers and Celtic idols Scott Brown and Steven Gerrard have in common

Brendan Rodgers has hailed the impact of stars in the twilight of their careers as he held up Scott Brown and Steven Gerrard as examples for strike star Jamie Vardy to follow.

Gerrard was a key force in Rodgers' electric Liverpool team that came so close to securing a title while Brown was a dominant figure in his Celtic midfield.

The Northern Irishman revealed he was told that the Celtic captain's legs had gone when he arrived at Parkhead - a notion that was quickly dispelled after a series of excellent performances.

And Rogers reckons that Vardy is cut form the same cloth as the veteran warriors from previous clubs.

He said: “I love working with younger players but in my last three jobs I’ve had Steven Gerrard , Scott Brown, and Jamie.

"Scott was 32 and they said his legs had gone but he was amazing for me at Celtic.

With Leicester City in second place in the Premier League and firing on all cylinders, he tipped Vardy to reach the 100 goals target he is just four strikes short of.

“Jamie has developed. I’m sure that when he hit 50 the thought of getting another 50 probably seemed far off.

“I would be so happy when he reaches the 100 and there’s no doubt that he will. He’s phenomenal. He’s a humble guy – he just likes scoring and is such a natural.

“When he’s off on a run on goal, there’s no doubt in your mind that he’ll finish it off. He just has that inherent belief.

“His confidence transmits to you because he has such a variety of finishes in his bag. His array of ways to finish off chances is remarkable.”
