Liverpool's need for another centre-back is now clear, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez's injuries putting huge pressure on the fitness of Joel Matip to maintain his availability.
Heading into the game with Leicester City weekend, though, there is a player that was signed by Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers over the summer who would have been perfect.
Liverpool decided that three senior central defenders plus Fabinho was enough for them to head into the new season with, and no-one could have foreseen the injury crisis that has followed in the early weeks of the campaign.
Had they chosen to enter the market in the summer, though, Wesley Fofana, who moved to Leicester for a fee that could reach €40 million, could have been the ideal target.

Leicester have won six of their last seven matches and Fofana has been a big part of that, settling into life at the King Power stadium instantly, despite only being a teenager.
As Leicestershire Live's Foxes reporter Jordan Blackwell said on the Behind Enemy Lines podcast, Foxes supporters have already seen a lot that they like from the defender - who could easily have joined a bigger club.
Blackwell explained: "He's extremely exciting. When players come from overseas, you feel like you need to give them a little bit of patience because it is coming to a new league and style of play.
"Bearing in mind this is a 19-year-old who had played 30 senior matches in his career, and was coming in as Leicester's second-biggest ever signing after Youri Tielemans, you would think he is going to need time.
"Rodgers had said a fair few times that Fofana would make mistakes because he is still a teenager but he has not put a single foot wrong in his first seven games!
"He is supremely confident passing between the lines, dribbling out from the back. Defensively he is excellent in the tackle, quick and very good in the air.
"He has been extremely impressive and already people are trying to farm him to more high-profile clubs because he is that good."
Leicester made a huge profit when they sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United for £80 million, and it seems their recruitment strategy could come up trumps again.
Blackwell added: "Claude Puel, Leicester's former manager, now Saint-Etienne's manager, where Leicester bought him from, said he wanted to keep Fofana one more season because he thought they could double his price.
"Having now seen him even for seven games, that does not surprise me and it is hard to find a single weakness in his game. He is going to be an exceptional player."
Liverpool could have entered the market in the summer, and would no doubt have been aware of Fofana's talent. Their decision, though, was likely that at that price, he would need to be Premier League proven.
Leicester took the gamble, and it appears to have paid off. Now the Reds have to find a similar bargain in January, or move into the New Year with that they have.
