Brendan Rodgers issues Steven Gerrard denial as former Celtic boss shoots down Richard Keys claim

Former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has denied he wanted to push Steven Gerrard out of Liverpool.

The pair worked together at Anfield and came close to winning the Premier League title in the 2013-14 season.

A slip from future Rangers manager Gerrard in a crucial game with Chelsea would prove costly, and pundit Richard Keys had claimed that the Irishman had wanted to push the club legend out.

But speaking on the  Keys and Gray show for Bein Sports, Rodgers put the record straight: "As always, there are always stories.

"Steven was brilliant for me during my time there. Especially in the first couple of years.

"He was towards the latter stage of his career and he was first class.

"So despite what you (Keys) said at the time, unfortunately it wasn't quite true.

"But listen, it's something you become used to in this game, there are so many stories and gossip, but it was interesting when I read that."

Gerrard played 710 games for Liverpool before leaving in 2015 for a two-year spell with LA Galaxy in MLS.

He returned to Anfield as a coach in the youth academy before accepting the Rangers job.
