Brendan Rodgers insists he was proud of Leicester's players over Chelsea fracas

Brendan Rodgers has vowed Leicester will “fight until the end” for a top four spot after insisting he was proud of their Chelsea fracas.

The FA Cup winners went down 2-1 at Chelsea in midweek in a stormy encounter as the Londoners gained revenge for their 1-0 Wembley loss.

Both clubs have since been charged by the FA with failing to control their players after an injury-time melee involving coaching staff too.

The defeat, combined with Liverpool's win at Burnley, saw Leicester drop out of the top four to fifth for the first time in nearly 250 days.

Now Leicester need a result at home to Spurs on Sunday and hope Chelsea or Liverpool slip up to qualify for the Champions League.

Boss Rodgers said: “In terms of the incident that is something that is with the FA.

“In any game you need to be cool and control the emotion.

“But the situation the other night, there were two sets of players who had come off the back of playing really tight, tough games in a matter of days.

“I was proud of my team.

“OK we are maybe little Leicester City but we are not going to turn up and roll over for anyone.

“So I was proud of the team that we stand up and fight and showed that mentality because that is what it takes to be a top team.

“We were united and together.

“We saw team-mates getting pushed and the players stood up to that.

“Of course it is not what you want to see but I want my players to stick together on the field and we did that.”

Rodgers is expecting plenty of twists and turns on the final day with Chelsea in action at Aston Villa and Liverpool home to Crystal Palace.

It could even come down to goal difference.

Rodgers insisted: “I don’t think it is over yet and I have that optimism and belief.

“We’ll be really disappointed if we don't do it, but we will fight to the very end.

“In every game there is pressure to win and I won’t lose any sleep over the two teams.

“We’ve got to focus on getting three points to finish on 69 points and see where that takes us.

“What we wouldn’t want is for the door to open and for us not to be able to walk through it.”

But even if Leicester end fifth for a second successive year, Rodgers insists his side will still have had a great season after they lifted the FA Cup for the first time.

He added: “If it doesn’t happen for us then we’ll all come back in the summer and be even more motivated and have an even greater incentive to push on next season.”
