Brendan Rodgers insists £19million defender Caglar Soyuncu still has Leicester future

Brendan Rodgers insists £19million buy Caglar Soyuncu still has a future at Leicester after giving him his first appearance of the year.

The defender, 22, signed from Bundesliga side Freiburg last summer, was recalled in the 4-1 win at Huddersfield .

It was just the Turkey international's eighth appearance of the season and his first in 2019.

But boss Rodgers insists Soyuncu still has plenty of potential to become a hit in the Premier League.

Rodgers, in charge since February, said: “He has been very strong but very unfortunate because you are playing one game a week and the team has stability.

“He is a young lad who has come in and I know he played in some of the cup games early on but perhaps things haven’t quite gone for him as he would want, but I have found him a really good boy who wants to learn.

“He is strong and aggressive, but he hasn’t had a lot of game time. He is adapting.

Leicester's Wes Morgan reborn since Brendan Rodgers gave him contract extension

“It is a different game in the Premier League and he is adapting to it.

“It didn’t help he didn’t speak much English at first. Adaption is important so I like to give them time to find their feet and settle in, knowing even in this first year he is adapting.”

Soyuncu was the subject of loan approaches in January with Turkish club Besiktas keen.

Soyuncu's prospects have not been helped by veteran club captain Wes Morgan,35, penning a one-year extension and Filip Benkovic being set to return this summer after a loan at Celtic.
