Brendan Rodgers in Celtic transfer déjà vu as Leicester boss fires signing warning

Firm Brendan Rodgers insists Leicester aren't looking to buy for the sake of it with just one week remaining before the transfer window closes.

And the Irishman's choice of words to describe his current signing stance won't have gone unnoticed by Celtic supporters.

The former Hoops boss is adamant the Foxes are in no rush to "stockpile" players as he looks to keep his side on course for Champions League qualification.

And the phrase was a favourite during his Parkhead tenure and he used the exact same expression 12 months ago as his time in Glasgow was nearing the end.

Rodgers, speaking in January 2019, said: "'If you're not spending maybe a lot of money on that then you always have to be careful that you just don't stockpile players.

"I'm always conscious of that. You'll always wait for quality."

And that transfer mantra remains in place as the 48-year-old searches for the right deals before the window shuts in seven days' time.

He said: "You may not see much go on until the last week, or the last few days even.

“We don’t want to stockpile players and it might be difficult to buy the types of players that we want in this window. We may look at some loans to support us.

"If we can’t bring in the types of players that are going to improve us, we’ll wait until the summer.”

Record Sport exclusively revealed earlier this month that Leicester are readying a £30m summer bid for Celtic talisman Odsonne Edouard.

And it could be more about outgoings this month at the King Power Stadium with former Hoops loan star Filip Benkovic among the players who could depart in the coming days.

Championship pair Bristol City and Derby County are both keen on the Croatia international who has struggled for regular game time with his parent club.

And Rodgers and the Leicester board will almost certainly rebuff any offers for key pair James Maddison and Ben Chilwell if interested suitors make their move.
